No Beer in the World Cup

World Cup SoccerOddly enough there is no beer sold a any World Cup Soccer match. Even with Budweiser as a sponsor, no beer is sold in the stadium due to how unruly a 'futbol' crowd can become under the influence of alcohol. At other sporting events a cold beer isn't a problem. When I think fighting and sports, other than Boxing or MMA, hockey is the one sport where you'd think you have a problem. According to FIFA.com the organizer and promoter of the World Cup, not even on their website shows or links, mentions anything about Budweiser as a supporter. Why then would AB want to spend what I am sure would be hefty price tag for the relationship?

Everything on FIFA.com's website promotes a healthy happy world. Apparently, what happens when people drink at a soccer match contradicts the image they want to promote, but happy to take the cash.

Go Netherlands! And, I'd prefer an Amstel Light.

I stand corrected, the Budweiser Bill reported by John Oliver explains the lift on the alcohol ban.

The Deep Web

DarksideAn anonymous cookie that is. With all the news about BitCoin and anonymous transactions making their way into mainstream news, started to investigate the Deep Web, or the dark side of the internet.   Only about 4% of the web is visible to the average user.   Sites like Facebook, Reddit, YouTube and other commercial business sites make up this 4% while the other 96% are sites that are not indexed by Google and Bing.   Wow right.

To surf the dark side requires anonymity and caution, (consider yourself fore-warned) You can look on Hidden-Wiki and search .onion, TOR and that will get you started.   A lot of the sites have been taken down and, count on being tracked by NSA, FBI and a few other 3 character government agencies.

It's a sick, sick world under the surface, I'll stay on the topside with the other 4%.

StartupNation.com Sporting a New Look

StartUpNationStartupNation.com is one of my favorite reads and one of the regular sites that I frequent for news and ideas when it comes to helping small and emerging businesses, like my own.  They are sporting a new look that makes it easier to read and keep up with the latest topics on my iPad.

Sections I enjoy are Getting More Sales, Leverage Business Technology and the general spirit of entrepreneurship that StartupNation.com promotes.   You'll never get rich working for someone else, so start and build your business around something you love to do and take the advice of other business owners that have traveled the same roads.

A little insight might just make the difference between being successful or making a costly mistake.

Where White Man Went Wrong

Two EaglesIndian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white US government official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You have seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done." The Chief nodded in agreement. The official continued, "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"

The Chief stared at the government official the replied. "When white man find land, Indians running it, not taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water. Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing, all night having sex."

Then the Chief leaned back and smiled, "Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that."

You are Not Forgotten - Happy Memorial Day

Take a minute to consider all those who have sacrificed for your freedom and have a great weekend. Freedom isn't free.

This image just brings it home, the vast many that have paid the ultimate price.

Essentially the Wrong Host

Stay away from 3Essentials.com shared web hosting.  Twice in the last month my site was down due to other technical errors on a shared hosting server, so I changed hosts.  Essentially up-time isn't guaranteed, nor is the money back or satisfaction guarantees.   I hosted with them for awhile, but the show stopper was how long, and how much of a battle it was to get tech support to look into the problems by email. (no phone support)

I expected to get my money back, not that it was a lot, just on principle.  But, past 45 days, they'll keep your remaining balance, read the fine print.  Since they wouldn't refund, I asked them to re-instate my account, but that's not their policy either.

No reliability, support or money back - three essentials you should be aware of.

Elfin Bad Taste Keebler

Keebler Truck Ad
This strikes me as really poor judgment on the behalf of whomever approved this ad to represent Keebler's cookies.

I didn't catch it at first then, sounding it out.  Hey, that ain't right.  If your can't read it, the caption reads "A little Elfin magic goes a long way".

It's an obvious play on the F-word to anyone older than 10.  Can you just picture some little girl stamping her feet and saying, "Mom, give me another 'Elfin' cookie".

Let us handle your ad campaign, we can do a Elfin better job.  Or, is that the buzz they really wanted to create?

Go give them H E double hockey sticks at Keebler.com.

DHTMLX's Java Script Library

dhtmlxGreat java script library at DHTMLX.com - editable grid for web applications, impressive charts. Build anything with it, even time-lines like an MS Project sheet in a web browser.

I'll be setting up a sample version here soon and how to install it with DotNetNuke for anyone interested.

Gamification - Building for the Next Generation

GamifyGamification is the process of making an application fun and rewarding to use.
Subtle psychological reinforcement develops bonds with users and in studies shows more hours using an app and enjoying the time spent.

Considering the up and coming generation of users have grown up with technology, it makes perfect sense to speak the same language. Most 15 year olds have been though 3 or 4 versions of a game app and fluent with MS office.

Want more on gamification? Check out this wiki. Even Al Gore's bloviating. But to see the real world example of how gamification relates in the work place, here's a follow up from Applebee's
